Els Uffa
Uffa worked as a mound-trimmer, passed over by recruiters because of
his kit-like simplicity. Even as tanks massed in his farm’s yard and
soldiers quartered themselves in the main house, he went daily to the
mounds to tend the termites. It was only when the barbed wire
encircled the fields and machinegun fire made the daily trip
impossible that he stopped work. When someone pressed a rifle into his
hands, he accepted that with a certain amount of reluctance. After
all, his grandmum had always told him he wasn’t to handle guns, for
fear he might hurt someone.
